Sunday Post

Quickly now....

Changing tax rates and smoke-screens:

The tax rules are changing in 2016 and even if Canadians don't make enough to be hit by the new top federal income tax rate, their financial plans are going to need to be reviewed.

The vast majority of Canadians will not be affected by the new tax bracket for income over $200,000 a year, but everyone will see their tax-free savings account contribution limit be reduced back to $5,500 for 2016.

Combined with the new lower tax rate for income between $45,282 and $90,563, even those who aren't in the top one per cent of income-earners should take a look at their finances to ensure they're on track.

Fact: the Liberals plan on raising the GST and enforcing carbon taxes which would harm lower-income families.

People voted for it.

Related: would people elect Kathleen Wynne again? Read the above. The answer is a resounding yes. Liberal voters love being taxed.

Beijing (capital of the country Trudeau admires) issues its second smog alert:

Beijing has issued its second smog "red alert" of the month.

A wave of smog is expected to settle over the city of 22.5 million people between Saturday and Tuesday.

The Chinese government predicts Levels of PM2.5 - the smallest and deadliest airborne particles - are predicted to top 500 - more than 20 times the level the World Health Organisation predicts as safe.

While the alert is in place, half the city's cars will be ordered to stay off the road, schools will be closed and factory production limited.

Beijing's residents are being advised to avoid outdoor activities and barbecues will be banned.
Visibility is predicted to fall to less than 500 metres (1,600ft) on Tuesday when the smog is at its worst as an almost complete lack of wind leaves smog lingering over the city.

Smog red alerts are triggered when levels of PM2.5 above 300 are predicted to last for more than 72 hours.
The four-tier smog warning system was put in place two years ago but this is the only the second time one has been issued. The first was last week .

Lebanese murderer Samir Kantar is dead and the world is a happier place:

An Israeli air strike killed Samir Qantar, a Hezbollah militant leader, in Damascus on Saturday evening, the Lebanese group and Syrian state media said on Sunday.

Israel welcomed Qantar's death, saying he had been preparing attacks on it from Syrian soil, but stopped short of confirming responsibility for the strike that killed him. ...

In 1979, Samir Kantar smashed four year-old Einat Haran's head with a rock, a crime for which he was celebrated.

And now he's dead.

Pope Francis has recognised a second miracle attributed to the late Mother Teresa, clearing the path for the nun to be elevated to sainthood next year, the Vatican said Friday.

Mother Teresa, celebrated for her work with the poor in the Indian city of Kolkata, is expected to be canonised as part of the pope's Jubilee year of mercy.

In the Vatican's Jubilee calendar, September 4 is already marked as a day dedicated to the late nun's memory and her canonisation is likely to take place then, experts say.
